The San Francisco Giants have used different ways to fortify their roster over the years. Most recently, the focus has been on drafting quality talent. But sometimes there are holes that need to be filled by trade. Here are some that worked out well for the Giants.

In researching for this piece, it was interesting to find out about the San Francisco Giants and their trade relations with other clubs. The Giants have most recently brought in players like Carlos Beltran and Marlon Byrd late in the season to make that last push to the playoffs. Those types of trades are common, especially when an injury occurs during the season.

Trades during the month of December are usually a little different.  It usually involves two teams that are looking to shave payroll, get younger, or open a logjam at a particular position. You get the benefit of having the player at the start of the spring.

The team is currently looking at the free agent market for talent, such as the signing of Jeff Samardzija. But once that avenue dries up, attention could turn to trades.

So let’s take a look at some of the better December trades in Giants history. Some worked out well for just the Giants, and some worked out well for both clubs.

At least eventually.
