Bullpen

An under-the-radar tale of redemption came to a head on Monday, as Brett Bochy was called up after being designed for assignment (and clearing waivers) back in July.

Since that time, Brett has gone from one of Sacramento’s worst relief pitchers to its best, lowering his ERA over a point-and-a-half. I guessed that his name might be called given his second-half performance, and it’s great to see hard work (with zero entitlement) being rewarded.

A day after Bochy’s return, Jeremy Affeldt rejoined the team after another off-field injury, as did journeyman right-hander Cody Gearrin, who, like Bochy, was more than deserving. His line with the River Cats in 2015: 2-2, 2.72 ERA, 46 K in 43 IP, .230 BAA. Not too shabby.
