Marlon Byrd (Reds)

I’ve been on the Byrd bandwagon for quite some time, and the reasoning is simple: Outside of their hole at second base, what do the Giants need most? 1) Outfield depth, 2) a power bat and 3) a right-handed pinch-hitter.

With all due respect to Justin Maxwell, who has been a quality fill-in—particularly in the field—all year, Byrd would greatly boost the team in all of these respects while adding another veteran presence to the clubhouse. If San Francisco is able to run the table and make it all the way back to the Fall Classic, Byrd at DH would be a no-brainer.

Personally, I’m surprised the front office didn’t toss another prospect into the Mike Leake deal to bring Byrd into the equation. With an expiring deal and 19 dingers on the season, the 14-year vet is sure to be claimed by a contender.
