Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. The rumors made it sound like the San Francisco Giants had a legit shot at adding either David Price or Cole Hamels:

But when the dust settles, the former will be shipped up to Toronto (via Jon Heyman of CBS Sports) while the latter will be packing his bags for Arlington (via Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports).

Is there some rule in the MLB by-laws that prevents the Giants from adding a full-fledged ace midseason? Jason Schmidt and Kirk Rueter were close, but certainly not at the level of a Price or Hamels. No matter—the team should be just fine adding another Jake Peavy type, or turning its attention an offensive addition.

That’s not to say there aren’t any proven talents left on the market. So, who are the Giants’ top remaining targets?

Note: Keep in mind that the following list represents the team’s “top targets” in terms of overall ability. I’ve omitted lower-profile, but equally plausible targets such as Rajai Davis, Martin Prado and Marlon Byrd.
