Hector Sanchez bat flip sparks “Gumgate II” between Giants and Padres

Drama, thy name is Giants baseball. At least, that was the case last night in San Francisco’s 9-3 blowout of the San Diego Padres.

The culprit? Well, there were three: Hector Sanchez, and Pads relievers Dale Thayer and Shawn Kelley. Here’s the tape:

If this scenario feels like deja vu all over again, it’s probably because another gum-throwing incident went down earlier this season between these two teams. It was eerily similar too: both involved a catcher, a brush-back, some jawing, and (of course) plenty of stickiness.

This one was obviously a little more tense with the benches clearing in the ninth, but thankfully, none of the players came to blows.

In defense of Sanchez: The dude just got called up after a long stint in Sacramento, and grand slams don’t happen every day, as he himself made note of after the game. He instigated the whole thing with a bat flip, but kept his cool when things got dicey.

In defense of Thayer and Kelley: Bat flips are never cool, especially when the opposing team just went up 9-0 (read: unwritten rules of baseball). Thayer didn’t exactly rifle his gum as Sanchez, more so tossing it out of frustration, and Kelley was just getting his teammate’s back.

Much like I did for the original gumgate, a guilty party must be brought to light, and I’m going with…concussions. Surprised?

Hector’s career has been on the downturn after all those nasty shots to the dome. No concussions probably means better big-league production, and no need for antics with the Giants way ahead.

A silly verdict for an even sillier situation. Yes, this feels right.

Hopefully, both sides stay classy in today’s rubber match.
