If all goes according to plan, Cain should beat the one-year mark in his long-awaited comeback (last start came on July 9th). While post-All-Star break was floated as a timetable awhile back, it now looks as though he’s just one rehab start away, if that:
“We’ve got a couple pitchers getting closer here. Cain is knocking on the door, but he could make one more start just to make sure his stamina and strength are built up,” Bruce Bochy said following Cain’s 89-pitch performance on Saturday (via CSN Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic).
Brian Sabean, in Sacramento to watch both Cain and Peavy over the weekend, liked what he saw as well:
Talked to Brian Sabean today. He was encouraged by Matt Cain's stuff, stamina last night in rehab start for Triple-A Sacramento.

Cain hasn’t been dominant in the Minors either (4.61), but he’s gotten more sure of himself with each start. Hopefully, that leads to success when he gets the call.
