Pence stalled while Cain, Peavy and Blanco progressing

Hunter Pence’s wrist appears to have worsened, as he is now wearing a splint and will not be able to swing a bat over the next week or so:

The injury obviously comes at an inopportune time, but as I’ve said in the past, better to be safe than sorry with someone of Pence’s caliber this early in the season.

Fortunately, the Giants should be getting one of their outfielders back in short order, as Gregor Blanco is set to return before the Dodgers series this weekend. Concussions are serious business, but Blanco’s a vet—if he says he’s ready after a week, then he’s ready.

Down at the farm, both Matt Cain and Jake Peavy are pushing forward with their rehab regimens. Cain recently made his second start with Double-A Richmond and didn’t look as sharp as he did his first time around. He gave up three earned over 3 1/3 innings, and his fastball was a few ticks lower than his prior outing, but he did strike out seven of the 10 batters he sat down.

The horse attributed his struggles to mechanical issues—something that can be fixed before his next time out, without a doubt. His pitch count (75) probably won’t change too much, but I’d expect better results nonetheless.

Peavy, meanwhile, put up a quality line with Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday:

The Rivercats lost the game, but Peavy has to be pleased with his individual performance. One or two more efforts like this and the 34-year-old will be back in San Francisco.

Speaking of which…
