According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the San Francisco Giants have acquired third baseman Casey McGehee from the Miami Marlins. The Giants will send RHP Kendry Flores and Luis Castillo to the Marlins.
McGehee, 32, in 2014 hit for a slash of .287/.355/.357 with 4 home runs, 76 RBI with a .712 OPS. He had a 102 wRC+ (100 is average), 2.0 fWAR, and accumulated a 0.7 defensive rating at third base according to FanGraphs. McGehee made 1.1 million in 2014 and is arbitration eligible, so he will likely make close to $2 million in 2015. Steamer projects McGehee to hit for a 95 wRC+ and a 0.2 fWAR.
The right-handed Santa Cruz native started his career with the Cubs in 2008 only seeing 25 plate appearances at the big league level. In 2008, he was claimed off waivers by the Brewers and played parts of three seasons in Milwaukee where he had a combined fWAR of 4.5 in over 400 games. After spending 2012 with the Pirates and Yankees accumulating a negative fWAR, he left for Japan where he spent the entire 2013 season. After puttiing up an OPS over .800 in Japan, McGehee signed a one-year deal with Miami before the 2014 season. He will likely hit lower in the order for the Giants.
