As Grant Brisbee said of Cuban Yasmany Tomas, “I don’t know what a Yasmany Tomas is, but the San Francisco Giants should get one.” And, he’s right. With new speculation surfacing of a new, shiny Cuban prospect wanting to come to the big leagues, it is time to pretend we are all scouts once more. It is time to pretend we love what we see in his videos, when in reality, we have no idea what we are watching. I’m the same. I’ve no clue how good he is, or even where he plays. But I want him. And I want him badly.
Okay, I lied above, a little. I know a small amount about this Cuban, Tomas. He is a power-hitting-outfielder with ridiculous bat speed. Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine. But there is something ever so attractive and tempting with international free agents these days. I mean, look at the successes of guys like Yasiel Puig, Yoenis Cespedes and Jose Abreu. I don’t want to miss out on the next Abreu.
Something tells me the Giants would be very interested in Tomas, too. Apparently, the Giants were willing to pay around $50-million for Rusney Castillo, who is old news now. Revisiting old news, the Giants were said to have among the final three contenders in the Castillo sweepstakes, sadly, the Boston Red Sox were the most keen and paid him lots and lots of money to join the Sox.
In a non jealous way, I’m glad. Castillo has the makeup of a leadoff hitter, and as valuable as they are, they sure aren’t as exciting as power hitters. Everyone prefers home runs to stolen bases, fact. And Tomas, as aforementioned, just happens to be a power hitting outfielder. The Giants just happen to need a power hitting outfielder.
"Teams will have their first official look at Cuban outfielder Yasmany Tomas since he defected at a showcase in the Dominican Republic on Sept. 21 at the Giants’ academy in Boca Chica."
So, Tomas will be working out in the Giants academy in Boca Chica, in the Dominican Republic. It sounds promising, it sounds as if he has some affiliation with the Giants. Only time will tell if the Giants have any chance at getting Yasmany Tomas, but if early indications are anything to go by, then he may just be playing in AT&T Park some time soon. I hope, anyway.
