San Francisco Giants announce September call-ups

By Melissa Felkins

The San Francisco Giants have announced September calls up for the expanded 40-man roster.

Among those called up were Juan Perez, Mike Kickham, Chris Dominguez, and Guillermo Quiroz are all coming from the Fresno Grizzlies, while Hunter Strickland is coming from the Richmond Flying Squirrels.

Perez has played 71 games in San Francisco this season as an outfielder. He’s a stellar defender, but has struggled at the play, hitting just .175. However, he’s hitting .316 in 48 games in Fresno this season.

Mike Kickham is a left-handed pitcher from Fresno. He pitched in a handful of games last season in San Francisco, but didn’t have much success. However, as a starter in Fresno, he’s went 8-8 with a 4.43 ERA this season.

Chis Dominguez has been a standout in Frenso this season. He’s a power hitter and this is his first big league call-up. He’s hitting .274 in Fresno this season with 21 home runs and 85 RBIs. He’s the first player in franchise history with at least 20 stolen bases, 20 doubles, 20 home runs, and 80 RBIs. Of all the call-ups, Dominguez is the player I’m most excited to see get his shot. He can play outfield, 3B, SS, and 1B, though most of his time has been spent in right field.

Quiroz is a catcher with some big league experience, including 43 games in San Francisco last season, however he wasn’t much of a threat at the plate with a .186 batting average and .237 on-base percentage. In Fresno this season, he’s hit .267/.295/.367. I can’t imagine we’ll see too much of Quiroz as he’ll be a back up to both Buster Posey and Andrew Susac.

Hunter Strickland is a right-handed pitcher with Richmond this season. This is also his first big league call up. He’s a relief pitcher with 11 saves and a 2.02 ERA and 0.813 WHIP.
