Giants release Dan Runzler to sign with Japanese team

By Jacob Fagan

According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, left-handed reliever Dan Runzler has been released to allow him to sign with Japan’s Orix Buffaloes.

Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News says he’ll be signed through the end of the year that includes an option for 2015. Runzler was drafted by the Giants in the 9th round of the 2007 MLB Draft. The 29-year old had shoulder and elbow issues throughout his time with the Giants.

Runzler pitched 323.2 innings in the minors while posting a 3.64 ERA and striking out 10.7 per 9 innings  and walking 5.5 per 9 innings. With manager Bruce Bochy’s impatience with walks, Runzler would’ve had to improve his control drastically to be able to pitch consistently in the majors.

Runzler struck out 37 in 32 innings while posting a 3.03 ERA in 2010 with the Giants

This season, Runzler had a 3.30 ERA in 46.1 innings pitched in Triple-A with the Fresno Grizzlies. He had 53 strikeouts and 36 walks while having a 1.60 WHIP. The hard throwing reliever has been up and down with the Giants since 2009 and his last appearance was in 2012.

In 72.1 innings pitched with the major league club, he had a 3.86 ERA while walking 44 times and striking out 78 batters. He will be making more money in Japan while being able to resurrect his career by pitching more innings.
