Joe Panik pulled from game with sprained right ankle

By Melissa Felkins

San Francisco Giants second baseman Joe Panik left tonight’s game in the 2nd inning with a sprained right ankle. The injury occurred while Panik was running to first base during the 1st inning. After being looked by Giants trainers, it was determined his ankle was sprained. Panik is officially listed at “day-to-day.”

Panik’s injury is just the latest in a string of injuries for the Giants. Matt Cain was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday with elbow inflammation. Brandon Belt is on the 7-day disabled list due to receiving a concussion during batting practice on Sunday. Angel Pagan is on the 15-day disabled list with a back injury. Marco Scutaro just returned from the 60-day disabled list with back issues, but is still having discomfort which has limited his play since returning. Oh, and Buster Posey hit a foul ball off his own leg tonight. He’s still in the game, thankfully playing first base instead of behind the plate, but the Giants are dinged up early coming out after the All-Star Break.

Despite the injuries, the Giants are still somehow playing good baseball right now. That said, Bruce Bochy has to be concerned about the depth of his bench right now because if the Giants are going to make a playoff run, they’re going to need health on their side.
