Each week, “Cow Tipping” will feature a San Francisco Giants’ prospect from one of our farm teams.

I decided to pick Shortstop Christian Arroyo for this week’s “Cow Tipping” because I realized that whenever I think of a prospect, he is one of the top prospects who sticks out in my head. He is probably the youngest prospect I’ve had my hopes up for. I remember when he was drafted last year, thinking it will be fun watching him mature and hopefully end up in the Big Leagues.

Born and raised in Brooksville, FL, Arroyo was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the first round (25th overall) of the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft, straight out of Hernando High School in Brooksville, FL.  He spent 2013 playing Shortstop for the Arizona Giants in the Arizona League. The Arizona League is the lowest-rung of the Minor League; also known as the Rookie-Level League. This year, he is playing Shortstop, Third Base, and Second Base for the Augusta GreenJackets in the South Atlantic League.

In his 2 years in the Minors, Arroyo has had 84 hits in 76 games, with a .278 batting average. He has had 57 runs, 3 home runs, and 53 RBI.  In Fielding, he has played 72 games, with 89 putouts, and turned 44 double plays. Arroyo was named the Arizona Rookie League MVP in 2013. He is currently on the 7-day DL.

Arroyo hit a lead-off home run May 9, his first home run of the season, against Delmarva Shorebird right-hander Sebastian Vader.  It will be fun watching this prospect, one of the  youngest players in the South Atlantic League, climb up the ranks and hopefully land a spot in San Francisco.
