Pre-Game & Lineups: San Francisco Giants Head To Pittsburgh

By Eric Nathanson

The San Francisco Giants(20-11) head to Pittsburgh on the heels of a 3 game sweep in Atlanta. It was the first sweep by the Giants ever in Turner Field. Tonight their attention gets turned to another playoff team from 2013, the Pittsburgh Pirates (12-19). First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 PT.

The Giants have won 5 straight overall and 9 of their last 10 games. This is the first of 3 meetings in Pittsburgh where the Giants have struggled recently. They have gone 9-15 (.375) at PNC Park since 2006.

The Giants lead all of baseball in batting average with 2 outs and RISP at .292. They have hit 41 home runs, second only to Colorado’s 44. The Giants have homered in 11 straight games. That’s the most since they did it in 14 straight during the 2002 season.

The lineups for tonight’s game.

In case you missed it, Matt Cain was placed on the 15-day DL with a cut finger and RHP Yusmeiro Petit (2-1, 2.61 ERA) will be getting the ball for the Giants again tonight. It will be his second start this season after throwing six shutout innings in a spot start last Tuesday.

For the Pirates, LHP Jeff Locke is making his 2014 debut. Brandon Belt is sitting against a left-handed starter. This may be to help him, or it may just be that Petit threw those 6 scoreless to Hector Sanchez last week. Either way, the Giants now have a big bat for late inning pinch-hitting tonight.

I leave you with Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle’s information about Matt Cain’s finger.
