Juan Perez Optioned To Triple-A Fresno, Jeremy Affeldt Activated From The DL

The Giants sent OF Juan Perez down to Triple-A Fresno to make room on the 25-man roster for LHP Jeremy Affeldt, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list today. Affeldt is ready to go, after making four rehab appearances in San Jose (2) and Fresno (2).

The Giants have been going deep into the bullpen so far this season and Bochy used all seven relievers in the 12-inning game against the Dodgers yesterday.

The Giants’ bullpen has a combined 1.89 ERA in 47.2 IP (10 ER) so far this season, ranking them second lowest ERA in the MLB behind the Brewers (1.42 ERA). The 47.2 innings ranks them 6th amongst other National League teams.

It’s understandable with those kinds of numbers/innings that the Giants would add another pitcher and take away a position player by activating Affeldt. Perez also hasn’t had much playing time the first few weeks. Morse has stepped it up defensively and is doing well in left field. Blanco has been the late inning replacement.

Perez also has options left so it makes sense to send him down to Triple-A and not risk optioning a player like Adrianza, who would be claimed off waivers by another team needing a utility infielder.

Perez had a .000 batting average in eight at bats this season in the regular season but an excellent spring training with the Giants. In 84 ABs, Perez had a .313 batting average with a .389 on-base percentage and two home runs.

3/22/14: Perez hits a three-run home run off Felipe Paulino in the top of the sixth inning in Spring Training.
