The Giants officially declined Ryan Vogelsong‘s $6.5MM option for 2014. We knew this was coming but it’s still sad to imagine Vogelsong in another uniform next year. Vogelsong will receive the $300K buyout instead.

It has been reported that the Giants and Vogelsong are done talking for now and the Giants will explore free agent options while Vogelsong will explore the free agent market.

"Henry Schulman reported: “I don’t think today necessarily eliminated the chances of him coming back,” says assistant GM Bobby Evans. “But it does put a step back in the process, obviously, as he looks at other options. He could find something very appealing, or we could find something that doesn’t filter back to him.”"

With the midnight deadline approaching, we may have to come to terms with the fact Vogelsong and other free agent Javier Lopez may not return to the Giants next year. Here is a photo Nicole Vogelsong recently posted on Twitter. This makes me a little teary.

The two-year/$35MM Tim Lincecum contract may have put the Giants back more than one would’ve thought. Let’s hope not. But there are other teams that are willing to spend more money. See the Dodgers.

Here is a short list of other free agent starting pitchers that won’t require the Giants forfeiting a draft pick:
