It was also announded today that Barry Zito will resume his role in the rotation and start Wednesday night against the Red Sox.
For now it would seem that Kickham will pitch out of the bullpen — unless he is used to rest another starting pitcher or take Zito’s start next time through the rotation. In Kickham’s last four starts he has gone 27 1/3 innings and given up only 4 runs for AAA Fresno.
Jeff Francoeur was hitting .194 in 22 games (62 at bats) with San Francisco this season. With the “Frenchy” era officially over, a spot on the 40-man roster opens up — so who will take it?
There has been some chatter around that Fresno closer Heath Hembree may get a shot. He has converted 30 saves this season (breaking the Fresno franchise saves record), has 7 saves in August, and has yet to give up an earned-run this month.
Another scenario that comes to mind is the addition of a third catcher.
With Bruce Bochy inclined to rest Buster Posey more as the summer wears on, there may be some need to add Guillermo Quiroz again — or Johnny Monell. Monell is hitting .275 with 19 HR’s, 57 RBI, and a .356 OBP from the left side of the plate this year for Fresno.
