Ryan Vogelsong (2-4, 6.71 ERA) will take on Dan Haren (7-11, 4.99 ERA) of the Nationals. Today will be Ryan Vogelsong’s second start for the Giants since his return from the DL on August 9. His velocity was down but he did pitch 6.0 innings against the Baltimore Orioles on 8/9, allowing 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K. Below is Vogelsong’s velocity chart (average/range), courtesy of Fangraphs.

Personally, I don’t like any match up of Vogelsong and the Nationals. May 20, 2013 was the day that Vogelsong (pitching a great game, leading the Nationals 6-0) fractured his right pinkie when he was hit by a bitch at bat was hit by a pitch from Washington’s Craig Stammen. Last year, there was THAT game on August 13, 2012 when the Nationals obliterated the Giants. Vogelsong was the NL ERA leader at the time but allowed eight runs and nine hits in 2 2/3 innings, his shortest outing of last season.

On a positive note, Brandon Belt is absolutely on FIRE the month of August. He has a .415 AVG, .500 OBP, 4 HR and 9 RBI this month. Pablo Sandoval finally got hot yesterday, going 3-4 with 2 RBIs.

Here are lineups for today:

In other news:

  • It was just announced Angel Pagan will begin a rehab assignment tomorrow at Rookie League in Arizona. His last game was on May 25, 2013  when he injured his hamstring again following his inside-the-park home run.
  • MLB to implement challenge system – Managers will be allowed two challenges over the first six innings of a ball game and one challenge after the seventh inning.
