Jul 20, 2013; San Francisco, CA, USA; San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Jeremy Affeldt (41) pitches during the sixth inning in a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at AT

Jeremy Affeldt (LHP) has been placed on the 15-Day disabled list after straining his left groin in last night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. According to CSN Bay Area and Andrew Baggarly, he’ll be out a minimum of 6 weeks. An MRI revealed a moderate strain.

To replace Affeldt in the bullpen, the Giants have recalled Jean Machi (RHP) from Fresno. Even though Affeldt can range anywhere from brilliant to downright terrible, his absence and flexibility in the bullpen will certainly be missed. Bruce Bochy has stated there won’t be any role changes in the bullpen, but considering Affeldt can be a long man when needed, it’ll be interesting to see if the search for bullpen help picks up over the next few days.

Machi has pitched in 26 games this season, with a 3.86 ERA over 27.2 innings. He has 2 wins and 0 losses credited to him.

Affeldt has pitched in 38 games this season, with a 3.51 ERA over 33.1 innings. He has 1 win and 4 losses credited to him.
