One of the San Francisco Giants’ top prospects, Gary Brown wasn’t expected to make the big league roster just yet as his semi-raw skill set needs a bit more refining. Still, with the Brett Pill injury, there were a few whispers that Brown could maybe, possibly, somehow crack one of the final roster spots when camp breaks in a few weeks.
It didn’t seem very logical and now we know it wont happen as the Giants reassigned Brown along with a handful of others (a HUGE handful – some reports saying 20 players in all) like Heath Hembree to the minors.
There’s no word on where Brown will be sent as of yet, though, the Giants’ outfield prospect played well in AA-Richmond last season and could be in line for a promotion to AAA-Fresno.
Hembree on the other hand should find his way back to Fresno where he pitched in 39 games last year to grease up his wheels a bit more.
Player who are currently on the 40-man roster, will be unable to continue to participate in Spring action unlike other players who were reassigned and are not on the 40-man, per the MLB rules.
Also of note – both Brock Bond and Nick Noonan were given their minor league reassignments as well, a sign that the Giants are apparently comfortable ( I’m glad somebody is : ) with giving Kensuke Tanaka a roster spot, because, uh, well, I can’t figure that one out yet either.
Update: Brown has been optioned to AAA-Fresno.
