The first injury of spring training came just a week after pitchers and catchers reported to the Giants’ training facilities in Scottsdale, Arizona. Yesterday afternoon, Javier Lopez was the unlucky recipient of a short hopped ball that ricocheted from his left hand to his face.
After the trainers’ thorough examination and a round of X-rays, the damage was found to be minimal—a slight contusion of the hand, and no noticeable swelling or marks on his face. Andrew Baggarly’s footage of the immediate aftermath can be found on the CSN Bay Area blog here.
As Bryan reported yesterday, Javier has withdrawn from the Puerto Rican team in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. His goal now? Just to stay healthy.
