With Brian Wilson continuing to drag his feet and play hardball, the San Francisco Giants are starting to close the door on a potential return – this according to CSN’s Andrew Baggarly who says the orange and black are in contract discussions with reliever Brandon Lyon.
Lyon, who has closing experience (assuming the Giants needed it at some point) split last season between the Houston Astros and Toronto Blue Jays, though struggled more in the National League as he posted an average 3.25 ERA with a 1.33 WHIP during his 36 innings with the ‘Stros.
It’s been a few seasons since Lyon’s closed on a primary basis, but with solid career numbers, adding Lyon to middle relief and having a backup closer isn’t the worst option out there – and frankly – statistically, there wont be much difference between he and Wilson.
Whether or not the deal gets done – that’s a different discussion all together. The 33 year old reliever is attracting interest from a handful of clubs, not including the Giants, so he certainly has his fair share of suitors to choose from.
