In need of some bullpen help, the San Francisco Giants made a move this afternoon, claiming Kansas City’s Jose Mijares off waivers. Mijares was having a successful year with the Royals, posting a 2.56 ERA to go with 37 K’s in just 38.2 innings – although, his splits may force him into a LOOGY role as right handed bats are hitting .358 off of the 27 year old arm, lefties a much paltrier .273. His career numbers show a similar path as left handed batters have hit .212 against Mijares, righties .272.
Mijares, who also played for the Twins before signing with the Royals as a free agent this past offseason seems to do some of his best work when put into stress situations, holding opposing batters to a .223 career average with runners on base.
It’ll most likely be one of a few bullpen moves before season end, but for a few pennies, it’s hard to knock the addition as Mijares should provide some solid depth for the ‘pen.
