Giants Acquire Hunter Pence and Beat Mets; Giants 4, Mets 1

By Melissa Felkins

I do believe Hunter Pence is an upgrade over Angel Pagan, Nate Schierholtz (who went to the Phillies), Gregor Blanco and Justin Christian. I’ll miss Nate’s arm in right field the most.

Oh, that’s right there was a game today too. Tim Lincecum was on tonight going 7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO. Hopefully, Lincecum can continue to turn around in the second half. Last time Lincecum was out against the Padres he only lasted 4.2 innings. If Lincecum can win 2 out of every 3 the Giants will win the division easily.

When you think 4 runs for the for the Giants, you might think Melky Cabrera and Buster Posey had a part in all of them. In this case the Mets scored the first two runs for the Giants. With the bases loaded, Brandon Crawford grounded into a potential inning ending double play but the Mets second baseman overthrew the ball to first which scored Marco Scutaro and Brandon Belt.

Later in the bottom of the sixth inning with the bases loaded and no outs, Marco Scutaro grounded into a double play which scored a run but, it was two outs. I’m conflicted because the Giants had the lead and they added on but, I really wished that it would be a single so, it would be a dagger in the Mets hearts. Brandon Belt ended the inning with a strikeout and a runner left on third base.

Marco Scutaro did come through in the bottom of the eighth with runners on first and second and two outs, he gets a base hit to score Ryan Theriot.

With five hits for the entire game, Scutaro was the only Giant with two hits, Ryan Theriot, Melky Cabrera and Buster Posey each had a hit a piece.

Next up Hunter Pence and the rest of the Giants take on the Mets for Game 3 of a four game series. OK, I’m over this Hunter Pence thing until tomorrow…unless he hits a Grand Slam.
