It was getting to be that time for the Giants as they had to either release Brad Penny, per his contractual wishes (assuming that’s what he desired) or call the burly right hander up. Today, we learned their intentions as Penny was recalled for Shane Loux who was placed on the disabled list due to a strained neck. To get Penny a 40-man spot, the Giants moved Eric Surkamp to the 60-day DL.
This will be Penny’s second go-around with the orange and black, his last (and only) previous stent coming in late 2009 during a short (although important) six game stretch in which Penny tossed 41+ innings going 4-1.
In eight innings at Fresno this season, Penny struggled, giving up five earned on nine hits and three base on balls, though Eli Whiteside said the Blackwell, Oklahoma native looked good to go.
