Matt Cain wasn’t particularly good today, he didn’t have control of all of his pitches and gave up four earned runs. However, the offense was sparked this afternoon and was able to come back twice down 2-0 after the first inning and 4-3 after the second inning. I think that the Cardinals being in the Giants presence made 3-errors.
Brandon Crawford and Brandon Belt sparked the offense. Crawford had a two RBIs in the bottom of the second inning. Based on his two hits for this game, he might be the number two hitter for the next couple of games. Belt was 2 for 3 with a walk. The second double was a running double. He was going for second on what is normally a single. He was aggressive on basepaths which is what we were promised last year. When he gets a hit he’ll stretch a single into a double. Hopefully, this increases his confidence and we can see him in the lineup more regularly.
Emmanuel Burriss had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning to score Angel Pagan. Aubrey Huff had a pitch hit error that drove in Brandon Belt. In the bottom of the seventh Brandon Belt doubled to get Buster Posey in. After Burriss took a walk, he performed on the base paths. On a ball potentially hit into a double play by Charlie Culberson, Burriss wasn’t able to avoid the tag of second baseman, Skip Schumaker, but Burriss screened Schumaker so he couldn’t make an accurate throw to first base. This scored Angel Pagan as Charlie Culberson was safe at first.
Buster Posey and Angel Pagan were good at the plate today. Posey was 2 for 4 with a walk and Pagan was 1 for 1 with three walks.
Jeremy Affeldt was great in a 1,2,3 seventh inning and Santiago Casilla also had a 1,2,3. Casilla had to face former Giant, Carlos Beltran but, he flied out. On a sad note Yadier Molina hit a home run off of Sergio Romo in the eighth. This shocked me the most cause watching the last seven batters that Romo faced, I don’t think any one of them were remotely close to making contact with his pitches period. Romo still pitched well.
