Could Eric Surkamp Break Camp With The San Francisco Giants?

By Bryan Rose

Coming into Spring, there wasn’t much thought that Eric Surkamp would stay with the big boy club once the regular season began, but according to Hank Schulman – given the injury to Ryan Vogelsong, it’s becoming more and more possible:

"Cue Surkamp, who is competing against minor-league invitee and fellow left-hander Brian Burres to be the “sixth starter,” who could turn into the fifth starter if Vogelsong has a setback."

The plan for Vogelsong is to get three Spring starts and hope he’s ready for the season opener, but if not, the Giants will look into bringing Surkamp along. They could skip Vogelsong’s spot in the rotation for the first week, DL’ing Ryan, allowing them to break camp with another needed player.

Either way – it doesn’t appear that the Giants are exactly thrilled with Vogelsong’s recovery from a strained back and Surkamp, who had four solid outings before hitting a wall, might find his way to the big’s once again.
