Giants Lose Spring Opener 9-6

By Melissa Felkins

Spring Training doesn’t matter. Well, that is unless the Giants end up having a great spring. Then it matters a lot. Alas though, the San Francisco Giants lost their Spring Opener to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Scottsdale Stadium Saturday. Diamonbacks 9; Giants 6. Personally, I’m just glad to see the Giants off to scoring more than 3 runs in a game.

It’s not all looking gloom, however. Brandon Belt, the whipping board the Giants management last season, had 3 hits on the day, including a solo home run in the bottom of the 9th. It wasn’t enough to give the Giants the win, but hopefully it gave Belt the confidence he needs to press the reset button on last season and begin afresh. Hector Sanchez (C), also hit a solo home run in the 7th.

Tim Lincecum threw for 2 innings, giving up 4 hits and 1 earned run. Lots of guys got playing time in today, the only notable exceptions being Buster Posey and Freddy Sanchez, who are still being given a bit extra time to heal before jumping right back into full-time catching and 2nd base duties. Brandon Crawford also drove in 2 runs today, with Melky Cabrera (LF) adding 1 RBI as well.

Pablo Sandoval went 0 for 3, Aubrey Huff went 0 for 2, and Nate Schierholtz went 1 for 3 today. Pretty disappointing start for fans hoping to see more from Huff and Panda this season. Right now, we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.
