I know what you’re thinking, Madison Bumgarner pitching a day behind two-time Cy Young Award winner?! In almost any other rotation, Bumgarner would be a solid number two starter. The Giants reasoning behind this is not ERA or truly any other statistic. It’s simply to break up the righty-righty matchup.
Most have assumed that the Giants starting rotation for 2012 would be Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Ryan Vogelsong, and Barry Zito. There are other possibilities though, especially if Vogelsong isn’t ready to go at the beginning of the season. They’re toying with the idea of Lincecum, Bumgarner, Cain, Vogelsong, and Zito. If Ryan Vogelsong is unable to pitch, it could very well be Lincecum, Bumgarner, Cain, Surkamp, and Zito. I’m operating under the assumption that the Giants would bring Eric Surkamp into pitch.
Which rotation are you most confident with?
