It’s the last day of January, which means tomorrow is February, the grand month in which players start showing up for Spring Training. Giants pitchers and catchers will be reporting on February 18th and position players report on February 23rd. It’s finally here folks. In 19 days we’ll starting hearing reports and rumors of just who will fill that 5th spot on the Giants pitching rotation. Wait, I meant 4th spot, since we already know Barry Zito has a steady hold on #5, regardless of what the front office says and actual pitching order.
But really, who are we kidding? No one cares too much about our other pitcher, our shortstop or who’ll be in left field or first base. I guarantee you that come February 19th through well past opening day, every single eye will be on Buster Posey. It was a long, long season without him for most of it. Even if every Giant plays like Aubrey Huff of last season, as long as Posey is back, really back, you’ll keep having that glimmer of hope. I know I sure will.
Spring training kicks off for the Giants on March 3rd. Stay tuned for what looks to be an interesting spring. A couple of us from Around the Foghorn will even be there during parts of it, so hopefully we’ll be able to bring you some firsthand insight. In the meantime, keep those countdown clocks ticking.
