San Francisco Giants 2012 Projections – Madison Bumgarner

By Bryan Rose

Ah, Madison, Madison. You make my baseball heart complete.

After a stellar 2011 season, Madison Bumgarner returns for a ’12 campaign that will hopefully be even more impressive than his previous season, which was elite in itself given the circumstances.

Let’s not forget Madison’s unexplainable start in June against the Minnesota Twins where he gave up an unheard of 8 earned runs and 9 baserunners in just 0.1 innings of work. So while he finished the season with a fantastic 3.21 ERA and 1.21 WHIP, you take away that game and his season ERA became an even more impressive 2.86. We’re talking more than elite stuff, we’re talking Cy Young type ERA there. To make that set home, remember, Bumgarner was only 21 for much of this past season – Clayton Kershaw, at age 22, had a 2.91 ERA in similar innings.

With Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain both taking the “pressure” off of being a number one starter, Bumgarner should hopefully continue to thrive in the third starter role despite the fact that he may actually end the season with the best ERA of the entire Giants starting staff.

While wins may continue to be hard pressed for Bumgarner (or any Giants starter), 2012 will hopefully make Madison’s star shine that much brighter.
