Giants Sign Boof Bonser

By Ashley Varela

RHP Boof Bonser accepted a minor league contract with the Giants, according to MLB Trade Rumors and Reynolds Sports.

Here’s the good news: you won’t find a better name in Major League Baseball than ‘Boof Bonser.’ It’s a name that can be parodied and unfortunately rhymed and just enjoyed.

Here’s the bad news: Boof pitched a total of 28.2 innings in the past two years, only surfacing for one game in the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in 2011. In the fourth inning of that game, he left with a forearm strain, and spent the rest of the year recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Boof’s last full season came in 2008 with the Twins, when he posted a 5.93 ERA and 1.48 WHIP over 118.1 IP. Over his previous 15 games in 2010 and 2011, Boof produced a 5.74 ERA and 1.63 WHIP, with a 6.7 K/9 and 3.19 BB/9.

MLB Trade Rumors speculates that Boof will be ready for San Francisco halfway through 2012.
