Buster Posey

Giants Close to Re-signing Whiteside and Mota

By Ashley Varela

That’s right—just when you thought the Giants had seen the last of Eli Whiteside, John Shea tweeted the following:

"#SFGiants non-tendered C Eli Whiteside Monday & said they’re open to re-signing him. Well, I hear the sides are close to a deal for 2012."

Whiteside, Posey’s primary backup catcher and full-time replacement in 2011, seems to split the Giants fan base. Reactions ranged from excited…

"@cornerinfielder: COME BACK TO ME, MR. WHITESIDE. #IAmIrrational #AndIKnowHeIsNotTheBest #ButLetMeWatchHimPlayInFresnoAtLeast"

to indignant…

to very upset.

"@NickSherrod Giants thinking of re-signing Whiteside!? …NOOOOOOO!!!!!"

Mostly, it was a great excuse to overuse capslock.

The deal has not been confirmed, so it’s anyone’s guess as to whether Eli will return to the minors, give Posey a break, or simply prevent Pablo from catching a few games. My hope is that Buster stays healthy enough to catch the majority of next year’s games, or that Chris Stewart gets a bigger role behind the plate.

In far more exciting news, Guillermo Mota is one physical away from signing a 1 year, $1M contract with the Giants. Mota posted an ERA of 3.81 over 52 games in 2011, with a WHIP of 1.26 and a strikeout rate of 8.63.

Finally, Bruce Bochy brings us the best news of all, via a tweet from SFGiantsFans:

"Bochy says he gets a text every week of Huff with his shirt off. Huff wants Bochy to know how much he’s working out this offseason."

Forget Buster and Freddy (who, by the way, are still on schedule for 2012); this is the kind of offseason progress I want to see!
