Pat Burrell Faces Retirement

By Ashley Varela

“I don’t think I can play anymore. It hurts me to say that.”

These are words straight from Pat himself, as quoted by Janie McCauley this afternoon. Reports from NBC Sports and CSN Bay Area indicate that Pat Burrell has likely seen his last career at-bat on September 28, 2011.

The 35-year-old outfielder spent two seasons with the San Francisco Giants while battling a bone spur injury in his right foot. His 58 runs, 72 RBIs, and 25 home runs earned him the nickname “Pat the Bat.” However, it’s his passion for the game and love for San Francisco that speaks louder than his numbers. I love Andrew Baggarly’s quote from Sabean last winter: “He did a great job being instrumental in leading that room and showing people how to work. So it’s gratifying to think that he appreciated the opportunity and more so wants to remain a Giant. Hopefully, he’ll forever be a Giant.”

We wish you the best, Pat, and hope to see you around AT&T next year.
