Arizona Fall League Updates

By Amanda Gill

Three players in the San Francisco Giants organization are curretly participating in the Arizona Fall league, on the Scottsdale Scorpions: Brandon Crawford, Gary Brown, aand Joe Panik.
Brandon Crawford shined defensively at shortstop this year for the Giants. He made backhand grabs in the hole look easy, and proved he had what it takes to play at the top. And while his first major league hit was a grand slam, he needs to improve with his bat. After six games at shortstop in Arizona, he his currently batting at a .360 clip with one double, two triples, two walks, and five strikeouts.
As the leadoff spot became an issue for the Giants throughout the seaso, many called for the promotion of outfielder Gary Brown. But management made the decision not to rush Brown up to the majors. In the Arizona sun he is batting .229 with two doubles, one triple, one walk, two stolen bases, and five strikeouts through eight games.
A shortstop from St. John’s university, Joe Panik was the Giants’ first draft pick of 2011. Because Brandon Crawford gets most of the playing time at shortstop, Panik has been playing second base quite a bit in the Arizona Fall League. His average after nine games is .200 with three walks and three strikeouts. I really hope they call him Joe “Widespread” Panik while he’s there.
