Brandon Belt To Play Winter Ball In Dominican, If He Has To

By Bryan Rose

According to local legend Andy Baggarly, Giants yo-yo’d first baseman Brandon Belt will be heading down to the Dominican Republic this Winter to get his best Duaine Kuiper on – taking part in the annual Dominican Winter League.

Belt wasn’t exactly thrilled with the idea when first approached, but after some “helpful talks” from Bruce Bochy, the Giants

bench player

first baseman decided he should take part.

"Brandon Belt wasn’t excited when Giants officials broached the subject of playing winter ball. But the rookie had a change of heart after meeting with manager Bruce Bochy on Wednesday. Now the reticent Texan is looking forward to his first trip out of the U.S. in a few months, when he’ll head to the Dominican Republic.“After talking with him, I really think it’s going to make me a better player,” said Belt, who was working with the Giants to find a roster spot. “If it’s the best thing for me, then it’s important that I go. There’s a lot I can work on, and it’d probably be for just half a season.”"

Me? I’m a little leery of the move, for a couple reasons. First, a little rest isn’t a bad thing for the body, especially when you’re not used to the Major League grind. Second, and more importantly, I’m not thrilled with the way it appears to have went down – almost in a “do your duty, you little minion” vibe. I mean, this is the same brass that questioned Madison Bumgarner’s mental grit. Clearly, Belt and Bumgarner lack veteran awesomenesszez.

Bochy says he wanted Belt to get more experience and playing time, thus the desire for Belt to take part.

Now isn’t that some ironic bullshit….
