The Giants, their teasing in full effect, called up former prospect and current 31 year old minor leaguer Justin Christian from the Grizzlies this morning, making it Christian’s first MLB appearance since 2008 when he was a member of the New York Yankees.
Christian has had a fantastic year on the farm, clubbing an impressive .338/.428/.574 triple slash to go with 10 home runs in 64 games for the Grizz.
There was little reason to leave Christian off the expanded roster, considering the current status of the Giants outfield with Andres Torres and Carlos Beltran being question marks going into the 2012 campaign. If Beltran was to depart via free agency and/or if they run into issues with Torres next year, I’m sure they’d like to know what type of player they have in Christian. He’d most likely be able to serve as (speedy) outfield depth on the bench, assuming he sticks around and the Giants like what they see.
It appears, at least for now, no Squirrel is making the MLB roster.
