A typical Sabean move – savvy vet who’s a tested playoff performer of yesteryear.
Cabrera, a two time gold glove winner has struggled offensively this season with a .244/.277/.321 triple slash, though, his solid glove work and ability to play second and shortstop will provide ample depth off the bench – I say that hoping he’s a bench player, but know better with Bochy…*sigh*
In exchange for Cabrera, the Giants shipped out Thomas Neal, which wont sit easy with the majority of Giant fans. Neal has progressively advanced through the Giants minor league system ever year, peaking at AAA Fresno this season with a .295/.351/.409 line which includes 2 homers and 25 RBI in 239 plate appearances, though Neal has struggled with injuries.
Myself? Can’t really get behind this move – Crawford is just as solid (if not better) defensively and while Cabreara clearly has longevity in his favor and is a season and a half removed from a .290 batting average, not sure the expense was worth it. I’d expect Crawford to be sent down shortly.
