Giants Beat Padres with a Nate Bomb (and Bullpen)

By Melissa Felkins

I’m an engaged woman. I love my fiancee. He’s such as awesome guy that he even proposed at a Giants game last August. Yes, it was on a scoreboard message. But so help me, if I could find a way to marry both my fiancee AND Nate Schierholtz, I would do it. I guess I should check on the Mormon religion for that, huh?

Nate Schierholtz popped the game winning, walk-off, solo home run that bounced into the cooler box of McCovey Cove during the bottom of the 14th inning last night. Not enough to please you? He also hit a 2 run homer in the 4th to put the Giants within 1 run after what looked like a repeat of Monday and Tuesday.

Pablo Sandoval got another big hit, a double, to tie the game in the bottom of the 8th and gave the G-Men a shot at the win. The bullpen, one of the other heroes, pitched 8 scoreless innings of baseball from the 7th to the 14th. They struck out 13 batters and retired 17th straight Padres between the 9th and 14th. The bullpen gave the Giants hitters inning after inning of a chance to win this game. Finally, the hitters did it and didn’t waste any time in the 14th. Schierholtz was the first batter the Padres faced that inning.

I could go on about how clutch Nate has been. How, all season long, he’s been the one guy that I always want at the plate during a big at-bat. Not Cody, not Huff. I’d take Panda, but he was out much of the season. Not any of those guys. Just Nate Schierholtz.

A few other stats to note:

  • Torres went 3 for 6, including 2 doubles and scored 2 runs
  • Crawford and Sandoval each had 2 hits
  • Sandoval and Schierholtz knocked in all 6 of the runs scored
  • Lopez, Romo, Mota and Ramirez were all amazing (Ramirez did walk a couple, but no runs allowed)
  • Wilson did his thing in the 9th, you know, couple base runners and finished it out with some help from the Panda, whom he owes a beer

Overall, that was a good win and the Giants needed it. I love seeing Schierholtz continue to step up and I love that our bullpen is, dare I say, better than our starting rotation, right now?
