Giants Ask For Torrealba – Rangers Want Casilla In Return

By Bryan Rose

Yesterday, Danny Knobler of CBS Sports Today mentioned that the Giants and Rangers opened up trade negotiations on a potential catcher – Knobler reported that the Giants asked about Rangers backup Taylor Teagarden who was recently promoted due to the Mike Napoli injury. The 27 year old backstop was putting up a very respectable .327/9/18 triple line down in the PCL through 108 at-bat’s, but holds a career .246 average in AAA through three plus seasons. Not exactly the thing dreams are made of…

So step in Baggs – who’s reporting that Knobler was half correct in his reports. The Giants did indeed ring up the Rangers, but, not for Teagarden, rather former Giant (and Giant killer) Yorvit Torrealba. The Rangers asking price? Santiago Casilla and zero salary relief on the $3.25 million Torrealba makes in the ’12 season. And according to Baggs, that conversation didn’t last much longer than that…

As for the catching possibilities, the Giants are just in a tough position. Teams know the Giants needs and are going to demand a bounty in return for a player who shouldn’t command anything near that level. Even the Nationals apparently wanted the kitchen sink for Pudge – a player that in a normal situation couldn’t command anything more than a low level prospect considering his age and value.

Eli Whiteside has been getting a lot of crap (and it’s certainly been worthy) but we’ve seen Eli be a more than solid defensive catcher in a backup role the last few seasons. His skills haven’t diminished over the course of an off-season. The grinds of being a daily catcher when you’ve never done it however can make you look pretty silly at times. Let’s just hope Eli can adjust….

Or pray.

Either way.
