The Freak Ties Christy Matthewson in Rockies Route

By Melissa Felkins

Lincecum struck out 10 batters in the Giants 8-1 win over the first place Rockies. If you’re counting, that is Timmy’s 28th double-digit strike out game, tying him with Hall of Famer and former Giant Christy Matthewson. That’s also most in the Giants history. If that wasn’t exciting enough, Lincecum threw 6 1/3  innings before giving up a hit to Carlos Gonzalez. It’s a long way from 9 innings, but a no-hitter would have been the first one at the live Coors Field since 1996.

The pitching wasn’t the only thing going for us tonight. The Giants scored 5 runs in the first inning. Burrell hit a 3 run homerun and then Schierholtz hit a solo homer into the upper deck. That ball went 467 feet. Freddy Sanchez added a homerun in the 2nd. Schierholtz, Tejada and Huff added the other 3 runs tonight.

Vogelsong had his first outing tonight and pitched 1.1 innings with no hits or walks. That’s promising since Zito will be out at least a month. Cody Ross is expected to be back tomorrow night so the big question will be if Belt stays or heads back to Fresno.
