One more day until spring training games begin for the San Francisco Giants.
When we step on that field at 12:05pm (Pacific Time) tomorrow, we’ll be officially defending our World Championship. We’ll also be figuring out if our team, with only minor moves in the off season, has what it takes to go back-to-back championships. No team has done it since the Yankees won three in a row from 1998-2000. The Giants did it before in 1921-1922.
As for tomorrow, here is a quick rundown of what to expect. Lincecum will be starting the rotation off for the Giants. Expect to see a lot of substitutions, particularly in left field where Burrell and DeRosa will be vying for a starting spot. Freddy Sanchez, who had surgery on his left shoulder in the off season has been cleared to start swinging a bat on Friday. That means we won’t see him in action for a few games in Scottsdale.
As for Lincecum’s competion? That will be Joe Saunders who went 3-7 with a 4.25 ERA in 13 starts with Arizona last season. It’s hopefully safe to say we will win the pitching battle. Let’s just hope we can keep the bats swinging like we did in the postseason.
By the way, if you’ve never been to Scottsdale Stadium, you’re missing out. It is heaven on earth.
