Some odd news today out of San Francisco – the Giants have signed fire-balling closer Rick Vaughn to a minor league deal. Many of you are probably familiar with Vaughn from the feature film Major League and many of his styles and antics are replicated by Giants current closer, Brian Wilson.
The odd move comes on the heels of – wait – what? The Giants didn’t sign Ricky Vaughn? Then who did they sign?
Marc Kroon? You mean the same Kroon who hasn’t appeared in the Major Leagues since 2004 when he played for the Rockies? The 38 year old closer, Kroon? Yes, that Kroon.
Kroon (have I said that name enough yet?) most recently played for the Yokohama BayStars and Yomiuri Giants in Japan, posting a 2.68 ERA and 417 strikeouts over 305 1/3 innings. And if those strikeout rates aren’t eyepopping enough, the fact that he was clocked at 101 mph not that long ago should grab your goat.
I’d love to see a good Spring from Kroon – I doubt it will happen, but, stop trying to crush my dream.
