Giants To Call Up Emmanuel Burriss

By Bryan Rose

Andrew Baggerly of the Merc is hearing that the Giants will promote speedy infielder Emmanuel Burriss today and finally stop carrying a 13 man pitching staff. No word on who will be the causality of the Burriss roster move but I’d suspect Todd Wellemeyer. He looked incredibly unimpressive yesterday and I’m not sure if he can properly fill the void of a long relief man. If not Wellemeyer, my next best guess would be Santiago Casilla – but I highly doubt that. Casilla has been solid all season despite some of the walk issues, but with the potential return of Affedlt and Runzler – somebody in that pen has to go.

It’s been over a year since Burriss suited up in the orange and black. He broke his foot last year then re-fractured it in the first Spring game earlier this year. Burriss opted for surgery on the foot yet again and this time they inserted a larger, more secure screw into his foot. Hopefully this will cure his snap ready feet.

There are also rumors about Brandon Belt being called up, and while that might be true eventually, I don’t expect that until next month at the earliest. He was pulled from Richmond’s game last night after one at-bat with no word of any injuries, right about the time the Giants decided to promote Burriss. But, if anything, it appears Belt will be sent to Fresno to replace Burris, in my mind. It wouldn’t shock me in the least however to see Belt in San Francisco in a little less than a month.
