Per Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Merc:
"“We still have to get all our team reports in by the All-Star break,” Sabean said. “Once that happens, you can really fine-tune who you’re going to scout.“We’re developing a list of guys in our minor leagues that we’ll trade and guys we won’t. We’ll have two lists. That is still in its formative stages.”One notable name on the “hands-off” list is top pitching prospect Madison Bumgarner, who remains the rotation’s first line of defense at Triple-A Fresno.“How can we?” Sabean said. “We might need him to pitch next week.”"
Baggarly also reported that Sabean said he is not interested in trading top-shelf prospects for players who will be free agents after the season. So, if Derek Lee was on your wish list, apparently, you can cross that off now.
It’s obvious the Giants are lacking a consistent late inning relief man and a big bat (or maybe even eight two) – positions always in demand and ones that many teams demand a small fortune for. But with the National League West division shaping up to be at least a three, maybe even four team race with every single game of such importance, can the Giants afford to not pay the demands? Do they risk another Francisco Liriano/Joe Nathan for A.J. Pierzynski? Or do they waste another year of excellent starting pitching – a luxury that wont last forever.
