Okay, at first glance, this idea might seem a bit raw – especially to all the fantasy baseball addicts out there who know of Lee’s struggles. But Giants beat writer Andrew Baggarly brings up the idea of acquiring the slugging cleanup hitter and I can’t help but support it.
The Chicago Cubs first baseman is in the midst of one atrocious season so far – currently only hitting .234 with 7 homers and 26 RBI. However, his numbers so far are a bit slued. His BABIP is awful, which is very unlike Lee and his line drive percentage has actually rose, despite that fact. In short, he’s been the victim of some extreme hard luck. Which is why he’d fit right in with the Giants….*rimshot*
There might be some initial concerns about contract length and money owed, but, no worries. Lee is only under contract for the remained of this season (13 million) and is a native northern Californian who has expressed desire of a California return before.
He holds a career average of .284, has legit right field power (perfect for AT&T Park), and is extremely polished with the glove. Let’s not forget, this is the same guy who hit .306 with 35 big flies and 111 RBI on a pretty blah Cubs squad last year.
The “problem”, which isn’t much of a problem if you have anybody but Bochy at the helm, is somebody would be left out – either Molina or Posey. I think we know what the right answer is, but, I question if Bruce feels the same way.
Either way, Derrek Lee is a great buy-low candidate in my book and one the Giants seriously need to look at if they have intentions of making a playoff run.
Edit: Added a poll…
