It was a rough spring for the highly touted Giants pitching prospect, Madison Bumgarner. The Giants had all the hope in the world that he’d come out, pitch well in the Spring, and they’d award him with the 5th rotation spot in the pitching staff.
Didn’t work out so well.
Bumgarner had a rough spring after a solid (all be it a small window) 10 inning campaign at the MLB level late last season and eventually lost his MLB roster spot to current 5th starter, Todd Wellemeyer.
Now Wellemeyer is struggling and after a rough start in AAA this year, Bumgarner is eating alive AAA batters, especially after adding a cutter to his already impressive arsenal. A slight change in his mechanics has also improved Bumgarner’s control, resulting in not allowing a homerun in over a month (especially impressive in the tennis ball/aluminum bat Pacific Coast League).
The continued success of Bumgarner continues to pressure the struggling Wellemeyer – a win/win for the Giants.
