Buster Posey

Giants Leave Cactus League With Best Record

and 38 players on the plane back to San Francisco, which is by far the largest number of players I can recall heading North for the remaining exhibition games.

Most players roster spots are known with a few still up in the air, mainly Fred Lewis, Buster Posey, and Henry Sosa. Sosa has had a marvelous spring, going unscored upon and holding hitters to a .184 average in 11 plus innings. But with the Giants bullpen so strong, Sosa is going to be an odd man out and will undoubtedly pack his bags for Fresno or Virginia shortly.

Fred Lewis on the other hand simply can not go back to the minors. Lewis is out of minor league options and despite the feelings about him that many of us have, he is major league ready and will be claimed by another team. So, rumors have Lewis starting out the season on the DL with “sore ribs”…which will more or less allow the Giants to hide Lewis on the 25 man roster until they can trade him or replace him with another injured player.

Lastly, Buster Posey. There is only one, maybe two (at best) roster slots open. One of those slots is going to go to Waldis Joaquin, Kevin Pucetas or Alex Hinshaw. Which means there is a large chance Buster Posey will not make the opening day roster and the Giants will ellect to keep Eli Whiteside as the main backup to Bengie. With that said though, I wouldn’t expect Posey to stay in Fresno for long. He’s had the best offensive spring by far and has little else to prove at the AAA level. If he does have a weakness, it’s calling games…but that comes with experience.

Either way, it appears multiple guys very deserving of a roster spot on the 2010 San Francisco Giants will be shut out.
