Posey Tearing Up Cactus League

By Bryan Rose

The Giants are in quite a pickle. Maybe literally, if Bengie Molina has his way.

Giants catcher and uber-prospect Buster Posey struck again last evening, doubling home the game winning run in the eigth inning, but that wasn’t the fancy part. It was how he did it.

Down 0-2 in the count and Giants infielder Matt Downs bouncing around at first, Posey stepped out of the box, gathered himself, and promptly drove the next pitch (a tight curve-ball) deep into the left field ally – a feat usually reserved for calm and collected superstars. Okay, sure, maybe I’m exaggerating…but only a bit.

Posey who’s torn up the Cactus League this Spring enters action today with a .382 batting average and has displayed nothing but calm and coolness when placed in pressure situations. He’s gunned down opposing baserunners with a rocket-launcher strapped to his right arm, one that has even had a few opposing players shake their head in disbelief.

With his ability to play first base, the Giants can’t help but think about keeping him on the big league roster come April. And once he’s there, he’s there for good. The future is bright with Posey manning the backstop for years.

In other news, Pablo Sandoval had to leave Thursday’s action with a pretty nasty cut after sliding into home on an Aubrey Huff double. Sandoval didn’t appear initially injured, but, he removed himself from the game and ended up getting five or so stitches to close the inch or so long wound. Closer Brian Wilson said Panda was in good spirits after they “stitched him up with some bamboo”.
