Preview: Round 2 Rockies & Giants Wild Card Battle

By Bryan Rose

No excuses. None.

Sure, the injury bug hit at the wrong time. No, Bengie Molina wont be playing tonight nor much of the series due to a strained calf. And no, Pablo Sandoval wont be playing Friday night and it’s possible he may miss the entire series. Freddy Sanchez sits on the DL. But, we’re home. A place where we just got outscored 18-9 in the three combined games with the Arizona Diambondbacks, yet, won 2 out of 3. It’s a magical place. A place where we’re 41-21, a record that is third best in the league behind the Red Sox and Yankees.

The series in Colorado started off so promising. A win in the first game with Lincecum and Zito to follow. All four games we had the lead. But alas, we couldn’t finish the job. This time it’s going to be different, right? Right!?

Tim Lincecum takes the mound tonight attempting to gain his 13th win, a win that has eluded him in his previous four starts, his longest stretch of the season. Lincecum last won on August 1st. Dueling against Lincecum tonight will be Rockies “ace” Ubaldo Jimenez who has 12 wins of his own, most recently an 8 inning win against our Giants in Colorado last weekend.

Saturday evening Barry Zito takes the hill against Jason Marquis and Sunday will present Matt Cain against Jason Hammel.

The Giants must have a winning series against the Rockies, be it 2-1 or 3-0…there are no excuses. The Giants have their three best pitchers lined up perfectly for this three game series, they’re at home, and their season is quietly on the line.

A sweep here and the Giants will be tied with the Rockies Sunday evening for the Wild Card lead as they currently sit three games back.
